Hello!

Carla has over 7 years experience as a mental health therapist and 9 previous years doing mental health and addictions work in the acute care setting as a social worker. She feels that people inherently know how they want to relate to themselves, those they love, and the world. Through careful listening and reflecting, she sees her role as facilitative, bringing forth preferences and helping her clients initiate their own change process that make sense for them from a stance of respect and worthiness of all.

Mental Health Concerns

Carla has experience working with children of all ages 5+, but is currently accepting only children of ages 5-13 (phone call consultation required), adults and families. She is passionate to see the strength and resiliencies of people who are willing to show up for a journey to their wellness. She believes that everyone has the ability to determine their own values, hopes, dreams, and style of therapy that works for them.

Counselling for Children, Couples, & Families

Carla provides compassionate counselling to all kinds of families who are experiencing difficulties, especially families impacted by a member with mental health concerns. She believes that everyone has the power to be a part of the solution and contribute uniquely to the whole. During family counselling sessions, beliefs, communication patterns , values and cultural issues are explored to identify preferred areas of work and how this context shapes preferred ways of being a family, while developing unique solutions to improve family dynamics, communication, respect and trust.

Child Therapy (ages 6+)

Carla uses play therapy techniques as the medium for children (ages 6-13), adults and families to process emotions in a safe and accessible way. Creating worlds through drawing, sand/water tray or with imagination and props, she helps people better express complicated thoughts, feelings or memories. Carla has completed level 1 play therapy and worked with children, youth and their families with this medium.

Family Therapy

Carla has completed a three year post masters diploma in family therapy from University of Calgary, therefore, family systems work is one of her specialities. Families consist of a complex network of relationships, feelings, and communication patterns. Carla can help families identify what works well for them, and utilize these strengths to improve conflict management, respect, communication, trust and balance. Every member of the family has contributions and a part to play in the healing process. However, because of the delicate balance of behavior patterns in the family, it is also possible to make change even if only one person in the family is committed to changing. Since we are all part of a social environment, Carla brings the systemic lens into her individual therapy work to help her clients build interpersonal relationships.

More About Carla

In her free time, Carla enjoys a good read with her book club, as well as getting outside and being physically active. Carla's roots growing up around agriculture have led to her passion for growing vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and shrubs. She enjoys playing the piano, attending live music events, watching live sporting events, and does the odd quilting/sewing project . Her cat, Charlie, and dog, Athena, always keep her family on their toes with their antics.

When she was little, Carla was told that she was sensitive and loved to talk. While this could have been perceived as a weakness, today it is one of her greatest strengths. She feels privileged to combine these gifts with her beliefs and values in people's ability to know what they need and strengths to seek it out.. Through a philosophy of curiosity, she seeks a safe connection, and dialogue to understand individuals, couples and families. She believes people are experts in their own lives, and that when offered a space to explore whatever they wish with more clarity, acceptance, courage, compassions, and humor, healing and solutions are found together.
