Who Can Mark Help?
Trauma & PTSD
Mark specializes in helping individuals who have experienced trauma in their lives including RCMP officers, first responders, veterans, and individuals who lived through a traumatic incident in childhood or adulthood. Mark has years of experience in treating trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using EMDR, cognitive processing therapy, and prolonged exposure therapy, which are three effective treatment approaches that help individuals process the trauma and overcome the stressful or unhelpful feelings, thoughts, beliefs brought on by the traumatic experience.
Anxiety is characterized by persistent and excessive worry that interferes with a person’s life and wellbeing. Mark has experience in treating a variety of anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), performance anxiety, panic disorders and phobias. Mark uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help individuals recognize and challenge unhelpful thoughts, feelings and beliefs. He also uses dialectic behaviour therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and mindfulness.
Anger is a natural response to frustrating or shocking situations; however, anger becomes a problem if a person experiences overwhelming rage that negatively impacts areas of their life including relationships, work, and leisure. Mark helps his clients develop anger management strategies to help regain composure and control over their emotions.
Depression is one of the most common reasons that people seek out Mark’s help. It is often identified by periods of prolonged sadness, loss of interest, and feelings of hopelessness. Although depression can feel overwhelming and insurmountable, it isn’t. Therapy has been shown to be highly effective in addressing the cause and reducing the symptoms of depression. Mark specializes in treating depression using a variety of approaches including cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectic behaviour therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and mindfulness.
People spend a lot of time at work, so it is imperative that the experience is positive. In many cases, the workplace can be stressful due to impending deadlines, difficult coworkers, overwhelming workloads, work transitions, and overbearing supervisors. Mark helps his clients develop coping mechanisms and implement effective strategies to improve coworker relations, set boundaries, reduce stress, manage performance anxiety, increase confidence and set expectations.
Grief and Loss
Losing a loved one is a devastating experience and it can be easy to get lost in the grief. Everyone grieves in their own way and at their own pace, but it always helps to have someone who is there for you and provides support during this difficult time. Mark offers a compassionate and non-judgemental space to help you process your grief and begin to move on.
Therapy for Children
Young children require a different approach to therapy than adults since children find it more difficult to articulate their thoughts, feelings, memories and emotions. Mark provides therapy tailored for children by using play therapy techniques that involve toys, art, puppets, and other creative ways to help children express themselves, process complicated experiences, and gain valuable coping skills that will benefit them throughout their life.
Families are complex structures comprised of different, sometimes clashing, personalities, opinions, and beliefs. While no two families are exactly alike, several counselling approaches can effectively be applied to improve family relationships. Mark has years of experience in helping all kinds of families improve communication, resolve conflict, reduce stress, develop parenting strategies, and ensure that all members of the family feel included, heard, and respected.
Mark provides a safe, open, and non-judgemental environment for couples to express themselves freely, discuss conflict, set boundaries and work on their problems. Therapy can help couples work through trust issues, infidelity, poor communication, intimacy issues, parenting disagreements, separation and divorce. Mark uses Gottman’s method and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) to help couples increase and nurture mutual respect, compassion, and empathy.
We provide an inclusive and supportive environment where our couples counsellors work with all kinds of couples including heterosexual couples, same sex couples, monogamous couples, polyamorous couples, those in open relationships, and more.
