Indigenous Counselling Services in Edmonton & Sherwood Park

We provide compassionate and culturally aware counselling to indigenous people struggling with mental health issues.

Our counsellors have a deep understanding of the unique circumstances and struggles many people in indigenous communities face, along with the skills and experience to help make a difference. EMDR therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and hypnotherapy are just some of the approaches that have been shown to be effective in treating trauma, anxiety, depression, and more.

Begin Your Healing Journey

Indigenous people have long faced severe challenges including systemic abuse, discrimination, childhood trauma, persecution, neglect, fetal alcohol syndrome, and cultural annihilation which has resulted in long term intergenerational trauma in many people. Although mental health counselling cannot undo the harm that was done, it is a start towards healing and recovering from serious generational pain.

Residential School Trauma

Whether you are a parent who lost their child, or the child who suffered at the hands of residential schools directly, we are here for you. The immense negative cultural impact, violent abuse, torment and suffering that occurred has left many people feeling anxious, lost and traumatized to say the least. Our counsellors, including Linda Mah (NIHB Certified) and Shelley Campbell (Not NIHB Certified), have direct experience working with indigenous adults and children who have survived and are still surviving the consequences of that dark time.

Youths and Children

Children and youths require a different counselling approach than adults due to a difference in how they process information.

A psychologist or social worker who works with children may use play therapy techniques or EMDR to help the child process and understand complex experiences, memories, emotions, beliefs, and feelings.

Troubled youths who have or are experiencing family problems, trauma, grief, or bullying may show their frustration by displaying anger, depression, behavioural issues, or risky behaviour. A youth counsellor creates a safe space where youths can comfortably explore their thoughts, feelings and beliefs , while giving them the time and care they need to understand, cope and overcome their pain.

NIHB Certified Psychologist

Mental health coverage may be accessible to indigenous people through the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB). Choose an NIHB certified registered psychologist or registered social worker to use your benefits.

Linda Mah is our NIHB certified psychologist who has years of experience directly working with indigenous people and providing compassionate mental health care that promotes healing of the mind, body, and spirit. Treatment with Linda can be directly billed to the NIHB.
